Matt brings his new Arctic Leopard EX 800 on ...its first Unknown—the first electric dirt bike in our group. None of us knows how it will handle what lies ahead. Will the battery have enough range? Can it tackle whatever terrain this mountain throws at us? With no established route to follow, there’s no knowing how much we’ll be asking of it.
It’s June, and the weather is hot and sunny—but the mountain is still holding plenty of snow. Before we even unload, we’re debating whether to stay or try somewhere else.
We decide to take our chances.
From a lakeside basecamp, we head out to find a way up. Wrong turns and backtracking eventually lead us to a waterfall crossing, followed by a steep climb with little traction. By the time we reach the snow line, a long day in the heat has taken its toll. We head back to camp with the route above still unknown.
Day two brings cooler weather, a difficult creek climb, and another battle up the slope that drained us the day before. Getting back to our high point is a challenge of its own.
Beyond it, the snow only gets deeper.
We keep searching for a way through, still unsure whether the snow will leave us a route to the peak—or bring the expedition to an end.
